Ipoh Gateway is located in the historic Ipoh Old Town, Perak. Conceptualised as a ‘gateway’ to learn about the city, the design combines a tourist information centre and an architecture gallery that showcases Ipoh’s history, from the colonial era to the golden age of tin mining industry.
The design challenge comes from the surrounding context. With many heritage buildings nearby, the new structure must pay homage to the local culture while also establishing its own identity. A large tin installation will become a visual interest at the entrance—a symbol of the city’s metal industry. The façade will be partly made of glass to convey a sense of connectedness with striking angular pattern at the edges. Large overhangs at the foyer will provide shading and reduce solar heat gain.
