Two decommissioned Mid-Life Refurbishment (MLR) train cars from the East Rail Line, donated by the MTR Corporation to the Development Bureau, will be repurposed as an exhibition and event space for Phase 4 of the Water Sports and Recreation Precinct in Wan Chai.
The project aims to provide usable space; beautify the harbourfront; commemorate the extension of the East Rail Line across the harbour; and enable the public to learn about the city’s railway development.
The laying of tracks, sleepers and ballast at the designated location has begun while the transfer of both cars, with a driver’s cabin, by sea and fit-out works are in the pipeline. It is set to open to the public by the end of this year, becoming a new landmark of the precinct.

Under MTR’s Legacy Train Revitalisation Programme, over 500 pieces of decommissioned train parts have been upcycled as recreational and learning facilities through joint initiatives with non-governmental organisations, social partners and government departments to facilitate donations to senior centres, school campuses and the public community, among others.
