The joint symposium organised by Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC), BEAM Society Limited (BSL) and Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB) in March 2024 centred around the latest developments towards sustainable construction, in line with the collective goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
The hybrid event gathered some 800 industry professionals, government representatives and stakeholders to foster cross-sectoral partnership towards the cause.
The half-day programme began with the introduction of the Net Zero Energy Building Certification Scheme by HKGBC. The scheme aims to facilitate building owners in benchmarking energy performance and accessing ‘green’ financing, having been included in Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s discussion paper on Hong Kong Green Taxonomy Framework.
Correspondingly, a chapter on carbon offsets was added to the HKGBC Climate Change Framework For Built Environment (Version Two). The framework was first launched in June 2023 and has since accumulated over 13,000 downloads from 54 regions.
The platform then saw 36 certificates being issued under the Zero-Carbon-Ready Building Certification Scheme—initiated by HKGBC in September 2023—to nine building owners:
- CITIC Tower Property Management Company Limited;
- Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD);
- Goodwill Management Limited;
- Hysan Development Company Limited;
- Kai Shing Management Services Limited;
- New World Development Company Limited;
- Shui On Centre Company Limited;
- Sino Estates Management Limited; and
- Swire Properties Limited.
It was also announced that the Zero-Carbon-Ready Building Certification Scheme has been integrated into related assessments offered by BSL and GRESB respectively. —Construction+ Online
