CUHK Medical Centre

Opened in January 2021, the CUHK Medical Centre is designed to be the first smart hospital in Hong Kong and set a local model for future healthcare facilities. It is located on a prime site next to the University MTR Station right at the foot of the Chinese University campus. The 14-storey, 100,000-square metres Medical Centre provides 516 in-patient beds, 90 day-beds, 49 consultant rooms of out-patient clinics and 28 operating rooms.

PATIENT-FRIENDLY & PEOPLE CENTER DESIGN

Nestled in the surrounding verdant environment, the Medical Centre focuses on design for patient wellness as well as healthy work place for operational staff. It offers both indoors and outdoors pleasant healing setting with maximum use of greening, courtyards and gardens. On the other hands, the medical centre’s clinical planning is well organised for optimum operational flows, stress-free working environment and as a teaching hospital, promoting active interactions between visitors, medical practitioners, research/teaching staff and medical students. The 3-storeys high main atrium at ground floor presents itself with a warm, patient-friendly wayfinding interior design that invites people to various out-patient departments and waiting lounges at upper levels.

FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION

The architectural outlook is designed to create a placemaking icon for the hospital but with an ambition to be able to put up different sponsors’ identities by logos on its four elevations without losing their compatibility as one organization. The architectural facade design is dedicatedly proportioned to reflect this challenge by appropriate interplay of solid and void, colours of glass, grills or fins to achieve a successful, unique, modern university hospital image.

Designed around two internal courtyards, the ward floors with the mix of single, double and 4 beds wardrooms fit neatly into a universal planning grid from bottom to top floors offering flexibility with economic modular design to adapt future user change as necessary. The same modular approach is well adopted at lower floors where departmental clinic areas are able to be optimized with the total building planning efficiency to achieve a good NOFA to CFA ratio at 1: 2.8X.

EXEMPLIFYING A NEW AGE SMART & GREEN HOSPITAL

The medical centre is designed to operate its healthcare management using advance digital technology and smart pharmaceutical and medical consumables logistic system to improve quality medical service for patient. In term of innovative and sustainability design, solar hot water panel system, food waste to liquid decomposer, water conservation design, electrical vehicle chargers, pneumatic tube transport system, boxyver vertical transport system, automatic refuse collection system, oil-free chillers and heat recovery chillers are installed to achieve a green, energy efficient and smart design building.

Full BIM design, construction & facilities management application are implemented from start to completion until handing over to hospital operator. During the construction phase, CUHK Medical Centre has achieved the finalist of 2019 Green Building Award and targets to obtain BEAM Plus Platinum certificate.
