Co-organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC) and BEAM Society Limited (BSL), the BEAM Plus Certification Ceremony 2019 was successfully held on 5 December 2019, honouring projects that have attained BEAM Plus ratings in the year. Mr WONG Kam-sing, GBS, JP, Secretary for the Environment, Mr LIU Chun-san, JP, Under Secretary for Development, and Sr CHAN Ka-kui, SBS, JP, Chairman of the Construction Industry Council, were invited to present the certificates to the project teams. About 300 guests representing over 80 BEAM Plus projects that achieved Final Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze, as well as Provisional Platinum ratings, attended the ceremony and received recognition from officiating guests.
To accelerate the transformation of existing buildings, BEAM Plus Existing Buildings (EB) Volume Certification has been launched in October 2019, enabling property owners, developers and facility managers to assess the sustainability performance of multiple existing buildings in a faster and more economic manner. A number of portfolio management companies have demonstrated their commitment to turning their existing buildings to green buildings by signing Memoranda of Understanding with both organisations on the stage during the ceremony. These companies include Sun Hung Kai Real Estate Management Company Limited and Hong Yip Service Company Limited, Kai Shing Management Service Company Limited, Nan Fung Property Management, and New World Development Company Limited. The company representatives committed to promoting Volume Certification to over 500 properties under their portfolios. It is foreseeable that there will be a growing number of certified existing buildings in the near future.
BEAM Plus is Hong Kong’s leading initiative to offer independent assessments of building sustainability performance. Since 2010, BEAM Plus has become the most popular green building rating tool in Hong Kong. Up to now, there are more than 1,300 registered BEAM Plus projects, covering a total gross floor area of over 400,000,000 sq. ft. The government is a keen supporter of BEAM Plus. Under their policy, major new government buildings have to achieve Gold rating or above under BEAM Plus. The scheme has gained popularity in the private sector as well. Since 2014, the annual percentage of private sector projects joining BEAM Plus has reached nearly 50%.
