Construction work performance output decreased in Q3 2019

The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) released the Quarterly Survey of Construction Output on 12 December 2019 to classify economic units into different industry classes. According to the provisional results, the total gross value of construction works performed by main contractors in the third quarter of 2019 decreased by 3 per cent in nominal terms over a year earlier to USD58.4 billion.

The analysis is categorised by the type of construction works performed by private and public sectors, as well as construction works performed at construction sites and at locations other than construction sites. Gross value of construction works in real terms is derived by deflating the corresponding nominal value with an appropriate price index to the price level in the base period of 2000.

For private sector, the gross value of construction works performance totalled USD17.1 billion in the third quarter of 2019, down by 1.2 per cent in nominal terms over a year earlier. In real terms, it decreased by 1.3 per cent. While for public sector, it decreased by 8.3 per cent in nominal terms over a year earlier to USD15.5 billion in the third quarter of 2019. In real terms, it decreased by 13.2 per cent.

The gross value of construction works performed by main contractors at locations other than construction sites amounted to USD25.8 billion in the third quarter of 2019, down by 0.8 per cent in nominal terms compared with a year earlier. In real terms, it decreased by 1.7 per cent.

Analysed by major end-user groups, the gross value of construction works performed at construction sites with respect to residential buildings projects amounted to USD15.0 billion in the third quarter of 2019, down by 1.5 per cent in nominal terms over a year earlier. Over the same period, the gross value of construction works performed at construction sites with respect to transport projects went down 12.9 per cent in nominal terms to USD7.5 billion in the third quarter of 2019. — Construction+ Online
