Kuala Lumpur, 5 October 2020 – This year’s World Habitat Day, with the theme Housing for All: A better Urban Future, was celebrated today in Surabaya, Indonesia. Subang Jaya Municipal Council, Malaysia won the UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour award conferred in the celebration.
Since 1986, World Habitat Day has been observed across the globe on the first Monday of October each year, highlighting a range of issues around sustainable urbanisation. To celebrate this, the Global Observance is hosted in a different city each year.
This year’s celebration presented the UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour to five winners. Among these winners was Subang Jaya Municipal Council, Malaysia, who is acknowledged for its holistic and integrated approach to affordable housing and community empowerment.
Over the past 10 years, the Malaysian Municipality of Subang Jaya has prioritised community development planning for low-income housing. This has led to the construction of 122 sites with low-cost apartments and provided solutions for the next generation.
The UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour award was launched in 1989 and is one of the most prestigious human settlements award in the world. It recognises outstanding contributions in the field of development including improving urban lives, provision of housing and highlighting the plight of the poor or displaced.
This year, there were almost 120 applications for the award, including 61 eligible individuals, cities, organisations and projects. The winners were selected based on their clear demonstration of initiatives and achievements related to the targets of Sustainable Development Goal 11: make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.
