Malaysia’s 4Q Construction Sector Statistics for 2019  

On a year-on-year basis, the value of construction work done in the fourth quarter of 2019 recovered by 1.3 per cent, accumulating up to RM37.0 billion. In contrast, the third quarter of 2019 had a negative growth of -0.6 per cent (RM36.1 billion).

The civil engineering sub-sector soared higher at 7.9 per cent in the fourth quarter 2019, followed by the special trades activities sub-sector 3.8 per cent. Residential buildings sub-sector rose by 2.7 per cent after contracting since the first quarter 2018. Meanwhile, the non-residential buildings sub-sector declined by 10.3 per cent.

Construction Year in Review & Forecast for 2019

The civil engineering sub-sector remains ,the main contributor to the value of construction work done with a total of 45.4 per cent share. Followed by non-residential buildings (25.1 per cent), residential buildings (24.5 per cent) and special trades activities (4.9 per cent).

The private sector propelled construction activity with 56.1 per cent share of the value of construction work done (RM20.7 billion), as compared to the public sector with 43.9 per cent share of the value of construction work done (RM16.3 billion).

Overall, the value of construction work done for 2019 grew up to 0.6 per cent, accumulating up to RM146.4 billion, as compared to RM145.5 billion in the previous year.
