Kedah Digital Library

Evening view of the library

The project celebrates a future-forward concept of “library without books” and redefines the role of a state-owned public library as a learning hub and community node. It used the adaptive reuse approach to transform the former Memorial Tunku Abdul Rahman Building, a two-storey colonial bungalow, into a digital library with a new Annex Community Building.

A courtyard was created between the old bungalow and the new building

In a digital library that runs without books, there is no more concern about damages to paper from direct sun exposure. Therefore, every area inside the new building is now filled with natural light and some key spaces even operates without artificial lighting during daytime. The interior spaces are also framed with park views to create a holistic integrated presence in its neighbourhood.

Moreover, an open-plan layout is adopted in most reading areas while low partitions and semi-enclosed booths are provided to ensure privacy. Various seating styles are available to cater for different users, including businessmen; professionals; students; children; and senior citizens who want to have a leisurely read of online newspaper via the provided tablets.

Open-plan layout is adopted in most reading areas
