Singapore, 31 March 2021 – The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded the civil contract for the design and construction of Hougang interchange station and tunnels for the Cross Island Line (CRL) to Samsung C&T Corporation, at a total contract value of S$604 million.
This contract covers the design and construction of Hougang interchange station and tunnels, as well as addition and alteration work to the existing Hougang station along the North East Line (NEL).
Samsung C&T Corporation has an established track record in providing design-and-build construction services for such undertakings locally and abroad. It is currently involved in the construction of Caldecott and Marine Parade stations on the Thomson-East Coast Line, Xilin station on the Downtown Line 3 (DTL3) Extension as well as some stretches of tunnels along the North-South Corridor. The company had also previously completed the construction of Hougang and Kovan stations along NEL, as well as Expo and Upper Changi stations along DTL3.
Construction works for the CRL Hougang station are expected to start in 4Q of 2021, with passenger service planned to commence in 2030.
The CRL is Singapore’s eighth MRT line. It will serve existing and future developments in the eastern, north-eastern and western corridors, linking major hubs such as Jurong Lake District, Punggol Digital District and Changi region. The CRL will have almost half of its stations as interchanges with other rail lines, making it easier and more convenient for commuters to travel across the rail network.
