The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES) unveiled 10 winners of the first IES Sustainability Awards as well as 10 recipients of the annual IES Prestigious Engineering Achievement Awards during the conference dinner of World Engineers Summit 2023 on 9 November 2023. The evening, which also marked the institution’s 57-year milestone, saw the presence of Chee Hong Tat, Acting Minister for Transport as the guest of honour and over 1,000 attendees.
The IES Sustainability Awards, among the key initiatives under the previously launched IES Green Plan 2030, seeks to recognise developments that support the city’s transition to a net-zero future, besides enhancing public appreciation of engineering. The awardees across three categories as follows:
Completed Engineering Projects with Sustainability Features and Practices
- PSA Tuas Port Maintenance Base by PSA Corporation Ltd;
- Phase 2 Intensification Project at BCA Braddell Campus by Building and Construction Authority (BCA);
- Indoor Vertical Hydroponics Farming using Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) by ITE College West;
- Sustainable Road Paving Solutions for a Greener Future by Land Transport Authority.
Innovative Solutions for Sustainability
- Accelerated Catalyst Development Platform (ACDP) by A*STAR’s Institute of Sustainability for Chemicals, Energy and Environment (ISCE2);
- Solarisation of Singapore’s Industrial Estates by JTC Corporation;
- Sustainable Green Station—Intelligent HVAC with AI-enabled energy optimisation system for Greener MRT Stations by SMRT Corporation;
- Smart Energy Town by Housing and Development Board.
Promising Start-ups for Sustainability
- Castomize—4D-Printed Orthopaedic Casts by Temasek Polytechnic;
- Flint Paper Battery by Flint.

Technology Innovation
- Smart Automated Aircraft Visual Inspection System (SAAVIS) by A*STAR’s Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R);
- Crimson S8: Singapore’s First Personal Aerial Vehicle (PAV) by NEO Aeronautics.
Applied Research & Development
- Advanced Aerospace Power Conversion System Development by Rolls Royce Pte Ltd;
- IDentif.AI: Actionable Drug Optimisation for Pandemic Preparedness by National University of Singapore.
Student Awards
- eNutri by Temasek Polytechnic;
