Kuala Lumpur, 29 November 2021 – The groundbreaking ceremony for Jalan Medan Jaya-Jalan Tun Hussein Onn Flyover Construction Project was officiated by the Senior Minister of Works, YB Dato ‘Sri Haji Fadillah Yusof, on 27 November 2021.
The Jalan Medan Jaya-Jalan Tun Hussein Onn Flyover Construction Project was approved in 2015 and listed under the 11th Malaysia Plan, Rolling Plan 4 (2020) on 25 October 2019. The contract cost is RM137.7 million. The construction work will officially begin on 3 December 2021 and will take 36 months to complete. The expected completion date is 2 December 2024.
Also present at the event were the Assistant Minister of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development (MIPD) Sarawak, YB Datuk Haji Julaihi bin Haji Narawi; Member of Parliament for Bintulu, and the Prime Minister’s Special Envoy to China, YB Dato ‘Sri Tiong King Sing; Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Integrity and Ombudsman), Datuk Talib Zulpilip; Deputy Secretary-General (Policy and Development) Ministry of Works, YBhg Dato ‘Wan Ahmad Uzir Hj Wan Sulaiman; and the Director-General of Works, YBhg. Dato ‘Ir Haji Mohamad Zulkefly Sulaiman.
The project involves the construction of a two-way four-lane flyover from Jalan Sultan Iskandar to Jalan Tun Hussein Onn (and vice versa), including upgrading Jalan Sultan Iskandar, Jalan Tun Hussein Onn, Jalan Kidurong and Jalan Johari Sunam, as well as upgrading the Medan and Taman Tinggi interchange.
The main objective of this project is to reduce traffic congestion, especially during peak hours caused by the rapid development in the area. The upgrading of the road network is also expected to stimulate local economic growth in Bintulu. With the construction of the flyover, the travel time from Taman Tinggi to Bintulu City Centre will also be reduced from 30 minutes to 15 minutes.
