Hairstyling and design are inextricably linked, and you get the ideal combination of both in Curve Cutting, Savour Dalang’s new salon in Dongguan, Guangdong, China.
Designed by Co-Direction Interior Design, the entire space is carved out with trendy curved lines, creating an impressive and fascinating visual and spatial experience. According to Jiang Xiao-Lin, Co-Direction’s founder, the curved space design of the salon was inspired by minimalist sculptor Richard Serra who is known for his sheet metal art.
As visitors enter the salon, they are led by gentle curved lines to the brightly lit reception area via a funnel-shaped passage way. Perhaps this would be the first hint that Curve Cutting is not your typical hair salon.
The salon space is divided into three Y-shaped hair dressing areas with intersecting curved lines, which corresponds with the halo-like soft film arc lights hidden in the ceiling. The use of mirrors help to multiply space, while creating a dynamic flowing effect.
A circular spa reception area leads to a futuristic looking manicure area in warm purple hues. There is also a hair washing area and VIP room with frosted glass doors and walls.
To add to the experience, the salon also includes a cosy lounge with an audio-visual system and two Roll & Hill Agnes chandeliers.
The surface texture of the locally sourced materials was derived from hair, wood veneer texture and straight grain stone. Due to time constraints, all materials and forms were customised in factories before being assembled on-site.
Space design, says Jiang, is about respecting people’s behaviour and emotion in space by making space practical and comfortable. It’s a combination of culture and art to create a space with a temperament and character of its own. The design had to be innovative and forward-looking, yet functional for business, as demonstrated in the Curve Cutting salon.
