Blue Space Office

Freedom, openness and returning to simplicity are the tenets that fashion planning agency Blue Space advocates. When Bloom Design was commissioned to design this old space in Guangzhou, to serve as an office and salon reception, it decided not to pander to popular aesthetics, focusing rather on how to make a difference when moulding the fashion temperament of the agency.

Simplicity brings about peace to the mind and a soothing balm to the senses. The interior designers did not introduce major changes to the fundamental structure of the space. Instead, they replaced the closed partitions with sliding alternatives that not only preserved the spatial flexibility, but also strengthened the concept of layering and fluidity of the space, extending the natural light and landscape from the outside to the inside. The entrance is fashioned into a dark, long and narrow passage, heightening the mystery of the space, giving a ritualistic feel when one enters it. Blue light enhances the atmosphere of the passage, faithfully mirroring the agency’s brand in colour. When the huge walnut door opens, a bright and roomy office area unfolds. The use of floor-to-ceiling windows and doors fuses the outdoor and indoor views in delightful contrast.

Space in itself holds its own language and soul. Through methods of removal and reconstruction, the designers eliminated 90 percent of the original finishes. Basic materials such as brick, concrete, stone and wood were used to give off a raw, edgy vibe. Moreover, in keeping with Blue Space’s mission of freedom and loyalty to simplicity, the layout scheme is kept open and spacious.

Though rough in hue, grey bricks are warm and reserved, evoking a sentiment of simplicity, coupled with an enigmatic mix of modern elegance and age-old primitivism. The designers wanted to invoke serenity, where large swathes of blank areas come together with embellished details that harmoniously complement one another. The space is natural, fuss-free and simple, inadvertently creating an artistic concept of not only returning to, but also steadfastly holding on to, the power of basics.
