Benchmarked against the Industry 4.0 model, the Advanced Manufacturing Centre (AMC) situated in the 75-hectare Tseung Kwan O INNOPARK serves to support re-industrialisation and commercialisation of innovations in Hong Kong. It is a pilot project showcasing how the design and development of an industrial building respond to the emerging trends of smart factories in a multi-storey environment for tenants from different industries, such as medical and biomedical engineering; smart electronics and optical equipment; semiconductor; and robo-electronics. AMC provides a gross floor area of over 1.1 million square feet with smart production technologies and comprehensive services for industrialists to turn innovative ideas into quality products.
The design concept is based on the idea of advanced manufacturing. With large footprint, high headroom, high loading capacity and wide structural span, the building can accommodate various scales of production units. A modular design with great flexibility and high building specifications was adopted for diversified uses, including pilot production with prototypes, scalable production and heavy production.
DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION EFFICIENCIES
Building Information Modelling (BIM) was applied in full scale to develop a digital twin model in facilitating the design process and construction sequencing. Site safety issues were anticipated and precautionary measures could be taken in advance. Throughout the construction process, a variety of digital applications were also deployed to enhance building efficiency, such as augmented reality; visualisation; artificial intelligence; sensor technology; mobile applications for digitalised workflow; and BIM 5D payment. Besides, AMC is the first project in Hong Kong to adopt a battery-powered energy storage system to replace diesel generators, which supplied greener energy for tower cranes and contributed to 84 per cent of carbon reduction for each tower crane, maintaining a safe building environment with less air and noise pollution.
