Experts from Hong Kong, the Mainland and other parts of Asia gathered at the Countryside Conservation Conference 2023 held on 3 March 2022. Government representatives, academics and professionals shared insights and exchange views on the theme of Protecting the Natural Ecology and Revitalising the Villages: Paving a Way for Urban-Rural Symbiosis.
Organised by the Countryside Conservation Office (CCO) of the Environment and Ecology Bureau, the conference was conducted in a hybrid format at the Zero Carbon Park. It focused on four major topics: Nature Conservation and Village Revitalisation; Planning, Governance and Economic Sustainability; Architecture, Art, Culture and Tourism; and Pioneering a Sustainable Journey. It aimed to share with the public the planning and work involved in countryside conservation, as well as to promote sustainable development in remote rural areas and achieve the vision of urban-rural symbiosis.
The Head of the CCO, Professor Stephen Tang, said that rural conservation is still a relatively new concept for Hong Kong. It is essential to pool the collective efforts of all parties to protect and revitalise the ecological, cultural and built environment of villages in the countryside, as well as to progress towards sustainable development.
