CIDB stern on taking accident cases at workplace to court

The Malaysia Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) will continue to be stern on taking those responsible for causing accidents at construction sites to court, as reported by Bernama.

Its chief executive, Datuk Ahmad Asri Abdul Hamid said this was to ensure that contractors involved in construction projects adhere to legal provisions.

“All parties involved in the construction chain have a big responsibility, so if there’s an accident due to negligence, action can be taken against the party responsible under Act 520 (CIDB Act 1994),” he said in a statement today.

This came after the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court today fined contractor, Tuck Sin Engineering and Construction Sdn Bhd, RM250,000 and ordered it to pay costs after finding the company guilty of the charge under Section 34D (1) of the CIDB Act.

The company was involved in building the KL Eco City link bridge which collapsed, killing Vietnamese worker Tran Xuan Vang on Nov 30, 2016.

According to the Act, any contractor that violates the provisions under Section 34B(1)(c) to the extent of causing death, commits an offence and upon conviction, can be fined not exceeding RM500,000 or jailed for up to two years, or both. — Construction+ Online
