BCI Asia Awards Top 10 Singapore Architect 2021
Echoing former Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew’s original vision of Singapore as a ‘city in a garden’, the design seeks to address the disconnection between the high-rise apartments and the lush greenery at the street level in the area. Each unit of the apartment, therefore, has expansive garden balconies, with organic, generous living spaces achieved by breaking up the traditional boxy floorplate.
DESIGN & MATERIAL
The design is shaped like the letter Y, with bedrooms situated at each end and the garden balconies in between. This approach grants privacy for each unit and allows for a spacious central living spaces that forms the heart of the residence. The building’s stairwells and lifts are located on the other side. By moving the cores to the back, 270-degree views of the city are created and the apartments can be cross ventilated in three directions.
The units are stacked on top of one another and raised above ground-level gardens. As such, the greenery appears to be threaded upwards throughout the structure via alternating balconies. The plants will grow to flow down the building, softening its appearance as well as surround each flat with foliage.
