As the first headquarters of Alibaba DAMO Academy (Academy for Discovery, Adventure, Momentum and Outlook), the Alibaba DAMO Nanhu Industry Park is located in the Nanhu Science Center District in Yuhang, Hangzhou where important and innovative projects are agglomerated. Occupying a site of 228,100 square metres, the project will be built into a world-class scientific research institute, comprising technologically advanced offices, research laboratories, visitors and exhibition centres as well as ancillary facilities.
The campus master plan design resembles a Bodhi leaf floating on the surface of the Nanhu Lake, with open courtyards and view corridors emulating leaf veins. Finger-shaped office buildings are set in parallel with the view corridor while canteen and public amenities are placed at the centre of the campus. A Zen-like courtyard is built for meditation, befitting the purpose of DAMO for learning and innovation.
The design integrates intelligent building system with automated supervision and smart system to enhance security, user experience as well as reducing energy consumption. Through detailed consideration, the project ensures efficiency in internal circulation; enhances natural ventilation; and maximises lighting and views towards the encircling the lake. Entry gateways, access routes and parking spaces are also carefully planned for pedestrians, cyclers and vehicles to ensure easy accessibility within the development.
The offices are designed to the latest trend of combining work, meeting and personal space into a collaborative workplace. The office buildings are uniformly low-rise, adopting a column-grid structure with flexible and modulated layout. They could be linked to create a larger workplace with a floor area ranging from 2,000 to 4,000 square metres. Working groups can be distributed around shared amenities, atriums and communal space to promote communication and collaboration. The buildings are encased in glass curtain walls to maximise open views towards the lake.
The project received the Best Futura Mega Project acclaim at the MIPIM Awards 2022.
