The construction of the Royal Monument at the King Rama IX Memorial Park is expected to complete in 2024

Bangkok, 16 December 2021 – His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua and Her Majesty Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana has recently officiated the groundbreaking ceremony for the Royal Monument of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great at the King Rama IX Memorial Park in Bangkok.

The groundbreaking was held on 5 December, which is King Rama IX’s birthday and observed as Thailand’s National Day and National Father’s Day. At the ceremony, a foundation stone was laid at the base of the monument, located at the centre of the King Rama IX Memorial Park. Construction of the park was initiated by Their Majesties, the King and Queen, in honour of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great and Her Majesty Queen Sirikit the Queen Mother. The work began in 2018 and is expected to be completed in 2024.

The King Rama IX Memorial Park covers an area of 111.6 acres, which was formerly for the Nang Loeng Racecourse of the Royal Turf Club. His Majesty the King donated the site to develop the park as a “new lung” of Bangkok and as a learning centre for the initiatives of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great and Her Majesty Queen Sirikit through the knowledge of forests and water.

The park has been designed to reflect the significance of humans and nature. It will be a source of learning about sustainable water management, agriculture, and the concept of multiple uses of forests. There will be a pond and a bridge in the shape of the Thai number 9.
