MahaNakhon is a new 77-storey high-rise complex located in Bangkok’s central business district, with a direct link to the Chong Nonsi BTS skytrain station. The development of more than 130,000 square metres will comprise a landscaped public plaza; a multilevel retail centre with restaurants and cafés; 209 residences operated by The Ritz-Carlton; The Bangkok Edition, which is a 154-room boutique hotel in collaboration with Marriott International and Ian Schrager; and a rooftop bar and Sky Observation Deck. MahaNakhon will be the most ambitious complex of contemporary architecture and urbanism in Thailand and the tallest building in Bangkok.
The design of MahaNakhon deconstructs the typical tower and podium typology, creating a skyscraper that melds with the city by gradually ‘dissolving’ as it flows downward to meet the ground. A series of cascading indoor/outdoor terraces at the base of the tower accommodates retail and entertainment facilities, evoking the shifting protrusions of a mountain landscape. There is an adjacent free-standing, seven storey building—the CUBE—with corresponding terraces that create an expansive outdoor atrium, forming a valley with a network of social, dining and leisure spaces that serve both the residents and the public.
MahaNakhon was carefully carved to introduce a three-dimensional ribbon of architectural ‘pixels’—in the form of glass sky boxes extended from the façade—that coil up the tower’s full height to reveal the inner life of the building. The glass sky boxes were designed to offer an unobstructed bird’s-eye view of the city and the Chao Phraya River. Residences feature both balcony-less and oversized balcony residence types, with many bespoke distinctive layouts. The top of the tower houses a four-floor Sky Observation Deck and bar with 360-degree views, floating 314 metres above the city.
