Boathouse Phuket is a resort destination to offer fine wines and fine dining. The hotel needed a renovation and upgrade after more than 25 years in operation. The design brief was to revitalise the resort while retaining its heritage and tradition.
Nautical theme was chosen to communicate the idea of a place for exploration and escape from everyday life. The decor was refreshed with a hybrid style of modern and eclectic, using unusual materials such as corrugated metal sheets and contemporary structures and forms. Taking The Boathouse’s physical location and surrounding environment into consideration, the designers drew inspiration from the Andaman Sea for the nautical theme. Using design imagery built upon the integration of sight, sound and smell, the end goal was to create an immersive, reenergising and sensory experience.
Having undergone several other redesigns and facelifts in the years before, the technical drawings of the Boathouse’s buildings differed vastly from the actual dimensions of the locations on site. This required each space to be remeasured and reconfigured on the ground, which meant that a one-size-fits-all design solution for similar room types was not possible. Although it was a challenge, it was also an opportunity for the design team to innovate and propose tailored solutions for each room.
Corrugated metal sheets were used to outfit the walls of the guestrooms and selected common areas, while rope was used to add detailed touches to room furnishings. With the exception of rugs and fabrics which were procured from suppliers based in Singapore, all materials such as the corrugated metal sheets and ropes were sourced locally in Thailand. The main considerations when planning the sourcing materials were cost, aesthetic value, ease of maintenance for hotel staff and contractors, and relevance to the design concept.
