YOTEL Singapore

Merit of Hospitality Category | Singapore | BCI Asia Interior Design Awards 2018

Situated within Singapore’s Orchard shopping district, the 30-storey-tall YOTEL hotel takes an elongated form, with an F&B arcade at the ground level and a seven-storey car park podium.

The façade of the monolithic tower, wrapped in glass and aluminium panels, forms a collage of patterns with a varying modulation of frames. This is complemented with a rustic bronze podium, starkly juxtaposed to appear three-dimensional against the tower. The podium screen is made up of triangulated elements in a vibrant pattern of alternating colours.

The overall colour scheme of the affordable-luxury hotel is a blend of its corporate colour and an Asian colour scheme for local context. A combination of soothing purple mood lighting, patterned grey flooring and white finishes are used in the public spaces, such as the waiting lounge, lift lobby and guest room corridors, maintaining a sense of simplicity and sophistication.

The design aesthetic of the 610 guestrooms is inspired by first-class airline cabins and Japanese capsule hotels. The signature purple tones are echoed in accent lighting within the cabins, with wood panels and flooring that add warmth to the modern vibe. The wallpaper is customised with local iconic landmarks.

The typical room size is 12 square metres, and each room features an open bathroom layout, a brand trademark to create an illusion of a larger space. Accessories, fittings and fixtures were selected and designed to maximise and create smart spaces.

Open spaces have been planned for co-working, social gatherings and exercise in the aim of creating a sense of community and interaction opportunities. At the hotel’s club lounge, vibrant splashes of colour in the furnishings add a touch of whimsicality to the stylish, cosy and inviting character of the space.

Through inventive designs, efficient planning and thorough consideration of the usage of materials, the design team cleverly combined innovative technology to transform a small hotel into something hip, neat, edgy and innovative. — Construction+ Online
