Singapore, 2 August 2021 – The annual Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Awards and bizSAFE Awards are given to organisations and individuals in recognition of their achievement of excellence in workplace safety and health. This year, 229 award recipients were recognised for their WSH efforts in 2020. The WSH Council hopes that, through their efforts, companies and individuals will pick up useful tips to prevent accidents at work.
Also present at the award conference was Dr Tan See Leng, Minister for Manpower. In his opening remarks, he said, “Over the past 18 months, our fight against COVID-19 has emphasised the importance of protecting our workers’ health at the workplace. Our workers are valuable partners and enablers for businesses’ commercial success. For businesses to remain operational and successful, it is vital that we care for our workers.”
He strongly urged all employers to uphold proper Safe Management Measures (SMMs), which includes allowing employees who are able to work from home to do so in order to minimise interactions at the workplaces. He believes that Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) amid the pandemic cannot be neglected; and it is not enough to protect workers from the virus, but yet expose them to workplace accidents.
John Ng, Chairman of WSH Council, at his opening address shared the ‘Win-Win Business Decision’ examples of two award winners. He mentioned that Lendlease and Wee Chwee Huat Scaffolding and Construction have demonstrated an admirable WSH partnership as service buyer and contractor respectively. Lendlease has good WSH performance for their multiple projects and boasts an established framework that holistically supports their workers’ health and well-being through various programmes and initiatives. Meanwhile, Wee Chwee Huat has maintained zero fatality since their incorporation in 1991, an impressive track record for an SME in the traditionally high-risk construction sector.
Ng said, “I congratulate Lendlease, Wee Chwee Huat, and other award winners for their well-deserved accolades, and urge them to continue their journeys, as good WSH models for others to emulate.”
