Thomson-East Coast Line – T2 Woodlands Station

Conceptualised for future TOD development, the project brief was to create an underground interchange station with minimal ground level constraints, so the entrance structures were designed to connect to the immediate residential and commercial developments. At the same time, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) nominated T2 Woodlands Station as a Civil Defence (CD) station, so the designs must also optimise open and direct high-volume passenger traffic within the standards of CD concepts and operability. A CD station may act as public shelters and provide protection in times of emergency. Such a shelter should be designed to ensure a comfortable, safe environment, with facilities that include protective blast doors, decontamination protection, ventilation, power and water supply, dry toilet systems and so on. As such, the station has high requirements for security, safety, structural and acoustic standards.

PRIORITISING SECURITY AND SAFETY
The station exterior structures are low-lying as they need to be easily maintained by using external equipment, allowing access for inspections, cleaning and other maintenance operations without risking commuter safety. The maintenance of the exteriors will only need scaffolds and high ladders. Powered lifting platforms may be utilised for urgent maintenance work at high levels.
