‘Soaring Marble Walls’ Apartment

This double-storey condominium unit has several interesting double-volume focal points, which have been accentuated with marble cladding in a scaled random pattern, divided by stainless steel inserts.

These ‘soaring marble walls’ create a modern luxurious look for the interiors and bring out the elegance of the black spiral staircase.

The rest of the interiors and furniture are kept simple and classy, without unnecessary decorations to avoid detracting from the marble walls.

RECONFIGURATION
This old four-bedroom unit underwent a major overhaul and layout reconfiguration as the family only needed three of the original four rooms.

The owners initially wanted to have the master bedroom cum study and the daughter’s room downstairs, and the son’s room and living hall upstairs. After some persuasion, a more conventional and practical layout was adopted, with the living hall downstairs and the bedrooms upstairs for privacy.

The original fourth bedroom downstairs has been hacked away to become an intimate living space, while its the attached bathroom is converted into a powder room that opens outwards. The powder room boasts a distinctive look with a marble lower wall and timber laminate on the upper wall.

The dining hall has been relocated to a double-volume space for a grander feel when dining with guests. With the new spacious layout, a separate chatting area between the living and dining spaces is also created. Finely detailed timber shelves with backlighting run the length of the dining space to the living space.

The kitchen is also given a total makeover and has been enlarged into the original yard space, with the laundry yard relocated to a secluded second-storey terrace that receives direct sunlight. The kitchen cabinets use the same timber laminate as the living hall shelves for consistency, finished with a white marble top with spray paint glass backsplash.

A SURPRISING DISCOVERY
Midway through the renovations, the contractor was instructed to open a small hole in the low false ceiling at the master bedroom, and a high pitched roof was discovered. The designers decided to expose the whole roof and restored the timber rafters for an extremely high ceiling space.

Tinted black glass is used for the walk-in wardrobe with backlighting. Between the two rows of full height wardrobes hangs a white marble top dresser table against a leather-clad wall with an accent light. The leather and laminated bedhead designs in all the bedrooms echo the same random patterns as the marble walls, further enhanced with wall lights.

The master bedroom walls are replaced with timber sliding folding doors that can be fully opened, creating a seamless vast space together with the open study area. Frameless clear tempered glass bordering the study opens up the view between the floors. — Construction+ Online
