Park Hotel Farrer Park

The design scheme for Park Hotel Farrer Park is luxurious yet unpretentious, elegant and functional. Knowing the client’s taste for the finer things in life, the clear design direction was to feature public areas that ooze luxury. There was no brief specifically given as the operator did not want to stifle the designers’ creativity.

The overall design inspiration for the hotel was the selection of a beautiful element/feature that would be repeated subtly through the hotel, some expressed boldly (as in the lobby’s triple-height space) and some hidden little gems for the guests to discover. One of these features is the contemporary Indian patterns expressed both in metal work and etched glazing.

The design concept for both the rooms and the public areas flows through naturally together from one’s first experience in the lobby to the guest rooms. The design and rich palette is contemporary, vibrant and engaging with a special nod to the location of Little India.

LOBBY
The lobby’s design is warm and inviting. As the guests’ first experience, the lobby should not only be aesthetically pleasing to the eye, but also pay close attention to the comfort and social interaction of the guests. This is also expressed through the individual reception desks where the hotel receptionist can come from behind the desk and personally greet the guest, adding that personal touch.

GUEST ROOMS
The design of the guest room follows through from the design of the lobby, which is an equally rich palette although a little pared back. A hint of the pattern that flows through the hotel is expressed as a soft light box for the bedhead with padded faux leather headrest below. The ‘jewellery box’ minibar is a distinctive feature that was designed with a tight footprint. For the loft rooms, the double-height space is fully utilised, with an additional furniture deck sleeping area. Reflective surfaces, such as full-height mirrors and high gloss laminate, create a feeling of space. Achieving just the right blend of finishes is essential to creating a warm and comfortable environment. The bathroom design is bright, fresh and uncluttered, with a generous shower adorned with soft beige marble walls and striking marble vanity.

MATERIALS
Highly reflective materials, high gloss laminate and mirrors are used to create the illusion of space in the rooms. Public areas follow through with a similar palette using exotic materials such as silver snake skin egg shell for the reception desk. This is complemented by the large cuts of Crema Marfil Marble on the walls and Golden Spider Marble adorning the floor.

OVERCOMING CONSTRAINTS
One challenge set by both the operators and clients was to utilise the space in the 20-square-metre guest room and treat it in the most functional/aesthetic way so as not to appear small, which was achieved with detailed planning and clever use of mirrors and high gloss finishes.

A feature pattern that has a close affinity with the area was created and then everything was built around it. Each area has its own identity, whether one is in the lobby, deli, Blue Jasmine restaurant or the executive lounge. The spaces are luxurious and inviting, with a rich palette of brown, red and warm shades of grey. The design pays close attention to comfort and style, with custom furniture and accessories used throughout the hotel.
