Following the award of civil contracts by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) for Punggol interchange station under the Cross Island Line – Punggol Extension (CPe); and bored tunnel between Fairways Drive and Sin Ming Walk under Cross Island Line Phase 2 (CRL2), the construction works for both are expected to start in the first half of 2023 while passenger service to commence in 2032.

The design and construction of CPe Punggol interchange station was awarded to Woh Hup (Private) Limited at a contract value of around $496 million.

As this new interchange station is located along Punggol Central, traffic and utilities diversions to facilitate the construction works will be carried out in phases to minimise inconvenience to residents and motorists.

Meanwhile, the design and construction of the bored tunnel between Fairways Drive and Sin Ming Walk under the CRL2 was awarded to Obayashi Corporation and Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co (Singapore) Pte Ltd Joint Venture at a contract value of around $758 million.

A large-diameter slurry Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), measuring about 12 metres in diameter, will be used to construct the single 5-kilometre-long tunnel with two tracks in it. A 2-kilometre stretch of the bored tunnel alignment will cross under the Central Catchment Nature Reserve where the tunnel will be constructed up to an approximate depth of 70 metres below ground level, deeper than the usual 20-30 metres. According to LTA, a comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment has been carried out beforehand and all the necessary mitigation measures outlined in the Environmental Monitoring and Management Plan will be implemented. Plus, various stakeholders including nature groups will be continuously engaged. —Construction+ Online
