Andaz Singapore

The main design brief was to capture the city’s distinctive shophouse experience at Andaz Singapore, while working within the framework of the modernist DUO tower development designed by German architect Ole Scheeren.

DESIGN CONCEPT
Andaz Singapore is fashioned as a multilayered cultural journey that conveys relaxed luxury yet captures the vibrant atmosphere of local areas such as Kampong Glam and Bras Basah. Bugis, having drawn inspirations from a typical shophouse alley. As guests explore the hotel, they will experience a strong sense of discovery—an experience that is quintessential to Singapore’s distinct juxtaposition of cultures.

In keeping with the alley concept, the experience of the guest room also embraces the neighbourhood spirit. Conceived as a contemporary bungalow, whimsical moments are introduced throughout the room—from the entrance doorbell that is housed in a bespoke postbox and the slender shophouse doors in bold mango yellow to the floor-to-ceiling ivory panelling.

Nestled high above the hotel is Mr Stork—a destination rooftop bar set within a lush tropical landscape and cobbled paving. At the heart of Mr Stork is a free-standing bronze pavilion, which is designed as an installation with radial tilted bronze fins reminiscent of a classic windmill. This destination bar is also layered with a series of private tents where guests are invited to escape into a rural dreamscape. The exposed aggregate and tropical landscape reinforce the idea of an urban yet rustic al fresco experience.

MATERIALS
The selection of materials was made based on how each item is able to fit into the holistic vision of the hotel experience. There is a strong emphasis on the use of timber, stone and anodised bronze in the project. There is also a strong play of colours to celebrate the distinctive palette of the shophouse experience. Indoor furniture and decorative lighting were all custom-designed and fabricated for the project. The fabrics were also sourced from a wide range of international suppliers.

OVERCOMING CONSTRAINTS
The distinct architecture of the DUO building has posed challenges to the design of the project, in particular the relationship between the round columns against the curved façade. Another key design challenge was in the execution of Alley on 25—a floor designed with seven key food and beverage experiences and conceived as a continuous alley of discovery. The concept has radically challenged the norm of typical hotel restaurant operation in terms of a vast support kitchen—it has made individual cooking technique the heart of each dining venue.
