12G BR House

The design is a combination of straight lines, smooth curves, simple shapes and flat planes

This inherited family home has been transformed from a traditional house into a modern architectural space using a monochromatic palette with an emphasis on texture. The intention was to retain as much of the existing structure as possible while giving it a new look.

Drawing inspiration from minimalist Japanese aesthetics and Scandinavian practicality, a light palette was chosen for the materials. Green-certified, light-coloured laminates resembling natural textures were particularly sourced. Laminates can last for a longer period in high humidity while appearing natural.

The laminates used are durable in high humidity while appearing natural

Natural daylighting strategy is also adopted in the home by ‘sculpting’ skylights out of the existing structure to let in sunlight. This was done to accentuate transitionary spaces such as the staircase and complement the light-coloured surfaces, while retaining a sense of minimalism.
