Waste Rig: Pudu Eternal Market

With its rapid economic growth, Kuala Lumpur’s waste has reached an all-time high, with about 3,500 tonnes of bio-waste produced every day. Some of this waste comes from the wet markets. Pudu, for example, is unable to process the waste (more than 100 bins daily) from 1,800 market stalls due to a poor waste management system. It was once a thriving economic hub in Kuala Lumpur with historical value, but now people are not very keen to visit. The Waste Rig project, therefore, aims to bring about value innovation to the context. Marrying biology and mechanical engineering, the tower is designed to manage urban daily waste and turn it into energy—circulating the economy and improving Pudu’s socioeconomic conditions simultaneously.

WASTE PROCESSING

Stalls at the urban market will be fitted with chutes that will send waste directly to the processing system. With this, hawkers will manage their daily cleaning in the urban market more efficiently. The waste processor within the tower will use an Automated Waste Collection System (AWCS) with pneumatic conveyors to transport waste from Pudu Market and its surroundings safely and efficiently. The method is designed to minimise the smell—the open plan design will help circulate the indoor air as it is essential to eliminate bad odour produced from the waste processing. Coal panelling with absorbent carbon material will also cover the areas. Finally, the acidic tower with calcium takes out hazardous environmental products from the biomass process. Therefore, the smoke released into the atmosphere is clean.
