Kuala Lumpur, 25 February 2021 – Southern Power Generation Sdn Bhd’s (SPG) Track 4A plant is now ready to supply 1,440 megawatts of electrical power into the national grid. The electricity is generated from its two 720-megawatt combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plants that are fitted with the latest efficient gas turbines developed by General Electric (GE).

Managing Director of Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) Power Generation Sdn Bhd, Dato’ Nor Azman Mufti, said, “I am proud to share that SPG can now deliver its full generation capacity as its second unit CCGT power plant has successfully achieved its commercial operation date on 19 February 2021.”

SPG’s first unit was also on track and has successfully achieved its commercial operation date on 1 January 2021. Dato’ Nor Azman also said that the two plants are strategically located in the southern part of Malaysia—in Pasir Gudang, Johor Darul Takzim—and are crucial in reinforcing the security of Peninsular Malaysia’s power supply. Both plants are fully operated and maintained by REMACO, a subsidiary of TNB Power Generation Sdn Bhd.

The electricity is generated using 9HA.02 combustion turbine technology from GE that is expected to achieve combined cycle efficiency at over 60 per cent. SPG is the first ever power plant that commercially operates these gas turbines models from GE.

In 2018, GE’s power services business signed a multi-year agreement with SPG for the new plant.  Under the terms of the 21-year agreement, GE will provide services solutions for the first two GE 9HA.02 gas turbines to be installed in the country.

The services deal follows the success of achieving the financial closure for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract with SPG in October 2017. SPG Track 4A plant was jointly constructed through the collaboration with a Taiwanese EPC partner, CTCI Corporation. It consists of two generating blocks, each equipped with a 9HA.02 gas turbine, generator and heat recovery steam generator.
