MRT3 Circle Line – the Last Piece of the Kuala Lumpur Urban Rail Network

The Mass Rapid Transit 3 (MRT3) Circle Line Project has been approved by the Government and will be fully operational by 2030 with Phase 1 expected to be completed in 2028. The project is the critical last piece to complete the Kuala Lumpur urban transit system, which will further encourage public transport usage. It will also enable the Government to introduce more measures to reduce congestion, such as charging vehicle and environmental fees, and drive carbon emissions down.

Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn. Bhd. (MRT Corp) has been appointed as the project developer and asset owner. Its Chief Executive Officer Datuk Mohd Zarif Hashim estimated that the construction cost of MRT3 Circle Line would be similar to MRT Putrajaya Line at around RM31 billion.

The MRT3 Circle Line will be around 51 kilometres and have a circular alignment running along the perimeter of the city. The proposed alignment comprises 40 kilometres of elevated tracks and 11 kilometres of underground tunnels. It will have 31 stations, of which 10 will be interchange stations connecting the existing MRT, Light Rail Transit, Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd and Monorail lines in the Klang Valley.

The MRT3 alignment will include connectivity to underserved areas of the city and a multi-modal transit hub will also be established. In its implementation, the project intends to scale up capabilities of Malaysian companies and talents in order to compete beyond the shores. – Construction+ Online
