Johor – Singapore RTS link agreement to be signed by April 2020

In May 2019, Singapore and Malaysia signed a supplementary agreement to suspend the construction of the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link Project until 30 September and an additional of one-month extension to the suspension until end of October 2019.

Malaysia has now agreed to continue with the Rapid Transit System (RTS) route with a new cost of RM3.16 billion on 29 October 2019. It requested a further extension of six months to 30 April 2020 to allow for important agreements to be amended and inked. Both parties are currently discussing the changes to the RTS project.

“In the spirit of bilateral cooperation, Singapore agreed to Malaysia’s request to further extend the suspension period,” Singapore’s Minister of Transport Khaw Boon Wan said in a written statement.

Khaw reassures that “Singapore welcomes Malaysia’s decision to proceed with the RTS Link Project. This is a mutually beneficial project for both countries. The RTS Link will significantly ease Causeway congestion, facilitate business and tourism, and bring our people closer together. While we are not obliged to accept Malaysia’s proposed changes, we will continue to keep an open mind and assess them carefully and objectively”.
