Bionic Prominence

This high-rise residential building in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, will provide a gateway to the town and introduce it to a different kind of lifestyle. The design approach of the building is modern and simple, yet environmentally friendly.

The main feature is a link bridge between two blocks of the building. Instead of placing the facilities on a lower level (right above the car park level where they are typically placed in high-rise residential buildings), they are situated on a higher level to provide views of Bukit Mertajam to the residents.

The main materials used include reinforced concrete, composite panels, curtain glass and steel. Building a high-rise development on a soft muddy site is one of the constraints faced in this project. Hence, the materials and foundation methods have to be carefully chosen. Another challenge will be the locals’ acceptance of high-rise buildings. The area has a higher percentage of landed houses, which are preferred by locals due to land availability. In order to change their perception, the architects aim to make the building distinctive and a part of the city’s identity.
