Innovation in infrastructure construction in Indonesia is crucial because the government is focusing on the development of transportation infrastructure to drive the national economy. One of the latest innovations introduced in the construction of Jabodebek LRT overpass is the use of the U-shaped girder, or precast concrete girders in the shape of the letter U. This structural component, which was adopted from a French consultant Systra, is now being applied for the first time in Indonesia by PT Adhi Karya (Persero) Tbk.
According to data released by the provincial government of DKI Jakarta, traffic congestion in Jakarta and its surrounding areas leads to an economic loss of around IDR 67 trillion per year, with additional fuel cost of IDR 28.1 trillion; and surging commuting time that costs the equivalent of IDR 36.9 trillion.
To compensate these losses, the government has sought to improve public transportation services, through efforts such as accelerating the construction of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok and Bekasi (Jabodebek) areas. However, limited land and budgeting had been the main issues hindering the development of this mass transportation project.
