Hong Kong, 4 May 2022 — The MTR Corporation announced the award of a consultancy to Mott MacDonald Hong Kong Limited to carry out the planning and preliminary design works for the Airport Railway Extended Overrun Tunnel (ARO) after an open tender process.
ARO is an underground tunnel, around 500-metre long, built beneath Lung Wo Road to the east of Hong Kong Station. It will facilitate turnaround for Tung Chung Line and Airport Express Line trains.
The consultancy scope includes the scheme’s development into an engineering design and preparation of the construction programme. Mott MacDonald Hong Kong Limited will work closely with the Corporation’s Capital Works team to deliver the above.

“The award of this contract marks the commencement of another part of MTR Corporation’s railway extension programme. Upon completion, Tung Chung Line trains and Airport Express Line trains will be able to turn around more quickly from Hong Kong—bound to Tung Chung—and Airport-bound, thereby enhancing train capacity and operational efficiency of both lines to cope with the transport demand in the future,” said Mr Roger Bayliss, Capital Works Director of MTR Corporation.
Other works relating to the project, including ground investigation and a survey of existing utilities, will commence soon. The construction works of ARO are expected to be completed by 2032. — Construction+ Online
