Colin Ward of Foster + Partners headlines Niccolo lecture by The Murray, Hong Kong

On 24 November 2017, Colin Ward, partner at British international studio for architecture and integrated design Foster + Partners, shared insights into the remaking of The Murray, Hong Kong, a Niccolo Hotel. Ward is the latest guest speaker of the hotel’s series of Niccolo Lectures held at the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce. Based in Hong Kong since 2007, Ward oversees a number of the firm’s cultural and commercial architectural projects in Asia.

Launched in 2016, Niccolo Lectures is a curated programme of inspirational talks featuring innovative thought leaders and creative thinkers. Duncan Palmer, managing director of The Murray, opened the lecture with introductory remarks on the history of the Murray building and its cultural significance to Hong Kong. Palmer explained that Foster + Partners were appointed to oversee the building’s preservation and renewal.

Colin Ward reflected on the significance of The Murray as a new hotel for the city, sharing his thoughts on the building’s modernist architecture and the inspiration behind the design of the original architect, Ron Phillips. Ward highlighted examples of the studio’s sensitive approach to transforming the former government offices into a luxury hotel. In enhancing the unique design, the studio developed new outdoor spaces, providing a green oasis for both guests and the public to enjoy.

Celebrated as a pioneering example of sustainable architecture in Hong Kong, The Murray was designed with deeply recessed square windows to increase energy efficiency by preventing direct sunlight from entering. A distinctive feature of the building, the enlarged windows are the central reference for the spacious hotel rooms and suites, which maximise visibility of the spectacular views of the city and the surrounding greenery.

“We are thrilled to welcome Colin Ward to our Niccolo Lectures and to have him share Foster + Partners’ design vision for The Murray with our guests,” said Duncan Palmer. “It has been a privilege working with the firm to preserve such a unique landmark and watch The Murray evolve into an international luxury hotel and inspiring lifestyle destination.” — Construction+ Online
