The Construction Industry Council (CIC) launches its second Sustainable Construction Award (SCA) this year to recognise sustainability best practices among organisations and practitioners, in particular the young generation of the construction industry.

Going virtual on 13 November 2020, the SCA’s Conference and Presentation Ceremony (Ceremony) allowed everyone to participate in this exciting event and gain more insights on the new direction in sustainable construction from the renowned speakers and awardees.

The Award consists of two categories, namely Organisations and Industry Practitioners, awarding 29 winners from Organisations Category and 18 winners from Industry Practitioners Category, with a total of over 2,000 industry practitioners participated.

At the Ceremony, Mr. Michael Wong, Secretary for Development, said that the SCA was of great significance, and the sustainable development of Hong Kong construction industry greatly depends on the support from the industry.

In view of the importance of sustainable construction, Mr. Wong mentioned that the government planned to issue green bonds totalling approximately HKD66 billion to promote the development of sustainable construction and the CIC is assisting the construction industry in obtaining green loans by formulating the Sustainable Construction Certification Scheme for Green Finance. The scheme aims to promote the development of green finance in Hong Kong.

Mr. Chan Ka-kui, Chairman of CIC, said at his opening speech that the SCA provided an excellent platform for the outstanding organisations and industry practitioners to share knowledge and valuable experience in innovative technologies and green materials. He congratulated the awardees again and praised their outstanding performance in sustainable construction.

Chairman and President of Hong Kong Green Finance Association Dr. Ma Jun shared his insight and knowledge on Green Finance Opportunities in China and Greater Bay Area and top winners shared their experience on the green finance opportunities and new era of sustainable construction. This year the topic of the panel discussion was ‘New Era of Sustainable Construction’.

They also exchanged views on subjects such as talent cultivation, green finance and low carbon construction technologies to explore their significance and role in the future of sustainable construction in Hong Kong.

Ir Albert Cheng, Executive Director of CIC, expressed deep appreciation to all contestants as their projects were the role models of sustainable construction. “Every single person in the industry plays an important role in the development of sustainable construction. The CIC will work together with the industry stakeholders to promote sustainable construction in Hong Kong,” he added.
