The Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, officially launch the National Optical Fiber and Connectivity Plan (NFCP) that was held on 19 September 2019 at the Putrajaya International Convention Center (PICC).
The NFCP’s five-year plan (2019 to 2023) was developed by the Malaysian government in an effort to improve the country’s economic competitiveness through digital connectivity and preparing the nation for the Industrial Revolution 4.0.
There are seven targets to be achieved in the next five years:
- Entry-level fixed broadband to achieve 1 per cent of Gross National Income (GNI) by 2020.
- Gigabyte availability at selected industrial areas by 2020 and all state capitals by 2023
- 100 per cent availability in all state capitals and selected high-impact areas to achieve a minimum broadband speed of 500 Mbps by 2021.
- 20 per cent suburbs and rural areas achieving 500 Mbps by 2022.
- Fibre network covering 70 per cent of schools, hospitals, libraries, police stations and post offices by 2022.
- Average speed of 30 Mbps in 98 per cent of populated areas by 2023.
- Improving mobile coverage along the Pan Borneo Highway upon its completion.
Digital technology is gradually being integrated into the construction industry in Malaysia. Technologies such as building information modelling (BIM); prefabrication; wireless sensors; automated and robotic equipment; VR and AR; and 3D printing are becoming key elements for all phases of a construction project.
In order to take advantage of these new technologies, a faster and more effective digital connectivity is needed. The implementation of the NFCP will have a great impact in the near future.
