The TANGGAM Design Centre (TDC) is an initiative by the Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB) with funding from the Tenth Malaysia Plan. The main objective of TDC is to provide design services and become a design hub for designers, students, the industries related or connected to design and other end-users who want to utilise the design facilities.
Located in Dataran Sunway, Kota Damansara, the centre is a three-level multi-functional building with an area of 1,000 square feet for each level. The ground floor consists of a gallery for designers to showcase their commercial products and postal boxes that are available for rent.
TDC offers designers an opportunity to rent workspaces—such as studios or workstations—which are equipped with personal computers, printers, design software, telephone landlines, plotter and internet access. There are 14 studios/workstations available for lease at a reasonable monthly rate on the first floor. The top floor comprises a resource centre and meeting rooms that are convertible into a mini conference space. The conference room can accommodate a total of 50 participants at any given time. The meeting rooms can cater for 12 people each or can be merged to become a bigger meeting room for at least 30 people.
TDC is the brainchild of the Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB)—an avid advocate of world-class furniture that is locally designed and produced. The centre aims to develop a portfolio of exciting new designs with an international appeal, manufactured and marketed by local furniture producers. TDC also strives to improve the quality of furniture designs in the country to stimulate the change from the existing level of Original Equipment Manufacturer, towards the practice of Original Design Manufacturer, and eventually achieve the status of Own Brand Manufacturing.
MTIB believes that this will encourage homegrown designers who are capable of attaining world-class reputation to facilitate the growth of the Malaysian furniture industry. The registration of MTIB’s TANGGAM label will protect the designers’ intellectual property created under the TANGGAM group. These designers have the benefit of exposure to many international furniture fairs under the sponsorship of MTIB. This effort is envisaged to provide sufficient protection and ensure that the intellectual property is relevant to current global economic development and technological advancement.
