Somerset Medini Iskandar Puteri in Johor is a mid-range serviced residence under The Ascott Ltd.
As Somerset Medini is located within walking distance from Legoland Theme Park and close to Hello Kitty Land, the design direction for the development is naturally more family oriented. The 310 units come in a choice of studio, one-, two- or three-bedroom apartments, with a fully equipped kitchen, separate living, working and sleeping areas, and an en-suite bathroom.
Interior design firm TID Design set out to create a cosy home-living experience, with priority given to safety and easy-to-use amenities that are suitable for both seniors and young children on vacation. A striking coloured feature wall and carefully selected artworks add warmth to each apartment.
In fact, the artworks in the rooms and public areas—featuring tropical flora and fauna, fruits and insects—are specially commissioned from Malaysian artists by the hotel to immerse foreign guests in the local arts and culture. All art pieces are original or reprinted works, with copyrights endorsed by the artists.
Somerset Medini is part of the 1.9-hectare Afiniti Medini mixed-use development, which features a lush green sanctuary, the Oasis. Designed by Grant Associates, the landscape architects behind Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay, the Oasis is a three-dimensional, multiple-level green space, which includes a central ravine, colonnade, water walls and overhead walkways.
Materials used for this project are chosen according to Green building requirements. Most are procured locally, while some premium materials are imported from China to keep within budget, without compromising the final finishes of the project. The monsoon rains and the wet weather were the biggest hindrances of the building works, but the delays were successfully countered with an increased workforce and efficient time management on the part of the interior design contractor.
