RTS Johor Bahru to Singapore’s deadline to be extended another month

Singapore’s Ministry of Transport announced in their official website that they have agreed to Malaysia’s request for an extension to the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link Project by one month.

In a statement issued by the ministry: “Singapore has also agreed to waive the additional costs incurred by Singapore during this one-month period arising from Malaysia’s request, but reserves the right to claim any additional costs incurred beyond 30 September 2019 should Malaysia request any further extensions of the suspension period.”

With this extension, the suspension period will end on 31 October 2019, instead of the previous agreement on 30 September 2019. Prior to the extension, a supplemental agreement was made between the two parties on 21 May 2019, which Malaysia had to reimburse Singapore for the abortive costs incurred, approximately SGD 600,000.

The RTS is a planned cross-border rapid transit system that would connect Woodlands, Singapore and Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia. It is expected to carry up to 10,000 passengers per hour. The construction was expected to be completed by 2024. However, it is now behind schedule with Malaysia consistently delaying its confirmation of the project. – Construction + Online
