Gleneagles Medini Hospital

Located in Medini, Nusajaya, Johor, Malaysia, the Gleneagles Medini Hospital is a state-of-the-art, multi-specialty tertiary hospital with a bed capacity of 150 and centres of excellence in cardiology, orthopaedics, medical care for women and children, oncology and ophthalmology.

Medini, Nusajaya is the first and most highly supported mixed development in Iskandar Malaysia. With parcels comprising leisure and lifestyle as well as culture and finance, the project not only addresses the healthcare strategy, but also complements and drives the development of the surrounding Medini parcels by filling in the gap for healthcare services provision. Well-resourced to boost the standards of health services in Malaysia and establish Iskandar as an attractive regional healthcare destination, Gleneagles Medini Hospital sets new benchmarks and reinforces Malaysia’s reputation for delivering world-class medical services to both residents and medical tourists.

The master plan included a medical block for specialists who wish to set up their own private practice within the hospital premises, and a new hospital block that will bring Gleneagles Medini Hospital’s total bed count to its intended capacity of 300. The planning and design of the hospital provided a platform that can accommodate future expansion and introduction of new clinical modalities.

The team designed each the phase as a stand-alone development with built-in adaptability for rooms to be converted for other purposes, and took into account the phased ramp-up of the facility to its full capacity. The façade, for instance, was designed to cater to future changes in the phase two construction of the hospital.

Regional materials were carefully selected based on criteria, such as the quality of craftsmanship and delivery expectations of the local workforce. Selective use of glass on the façade creates an image of openness and offers natural daylighting and views. To preserve the natural foliage of the site, existing mature trees and shrubs were transplanted in the terraced garden. This helps create a healing environment with lush greenery and ample daylighting.
