IN DESIGN

Linggisan Resort

Linggisan Resort was designed to be the most efficient compromise between the triple bottom line concept—people, planet and profit—as well as a benchmark for eco-luxury resorts in the world.

The design team created a barefoot luxury concept based on simpler designs that required less materials and energy consumption, such as beds that incorporate small pipes to deliver air-conditioning on demand. They also created a foundation called Blue Life Ecoservices to take care of the local population, protect the environment and promote eco-tourism. Blue Life Ecoservices was initially funded by Jupiter Grace to ensure that two of the three axis of sustainable development—the people and planet aspects of the triple bottom line—were taken care of in a systematic manner without compromise.

The resort comprises a main clubhouse lobby reception, bar, restaurant and office, staff accommodation, swimming pool, jetty, floating restaurant, mud pods (souvenir shop, spa, massage, gym and pod) and generator room. Timber from sustainable forests that is FSC-certified or from government controlled forest in Sabah will be used to build 35 villas, guest facilities and back of the house. Bamboo from local sources will also be used for this project.

The most substantial environmental effort will come from the mechanical and electrical trades on an island that has limited freshwater supplies, is disconnected from the grid and lacks a sewage system. The team designed a state-of-the-art system to ensure the supply of clean electricity—electrical power that is free from voltage spikes and drops—freshwater and recycling of rainwater and sewage. They also worked on reducing the need for power with an architectural design that favours natural ventilation—whereby air-conditioning is only needed at the bed area—and a rethink of the management of other energy-demanding facilities. For example, the kitchen was designed to reduce the need for chillers by using slow food techniques.

Linggisan Resort’s objective is to become a reference point for the hospitality industry. This sustainability concept has also been used to build 250 villas in a mega-resort in the Maldives.
