Showcase!: Diversity of rising design talent

Date: 1 September 2017
Companies: Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Hong Kong Chapter, BCI Asia and colourliving

Over 50 guests gathered for the RIBA HK Chapter’s SHOWCASE! Event in colourliving’s showroom in Wanchai on 1 September 2017. This event, organised in collaboration with BCI Asia and colourliving, provided a platform for rising design talents in Hong Kong to showcase their creativity and exchange ideas with like-minded people in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. With the theme of ‘We are Inspired By…’, six presenters from different architecture and interior design firms presented about whoever or whatever that inspires their design philosophy and how that philosophy is translated into their work:

1) Daydreamers Design – Stanley Siu / Aden Chan (http://www.daydreamersdesign.hk)
2) Groundwork Architecture – Manfred Yuen, Founder of Groundwork Architecture (https://www.groundworkarchitect.com)
3) HIR Studio – Howard Chung, Founder and Design Principal of HIR Studio (https://www.hir-studio.com)
4) One Bite Design – Sarah Mui, Design Director of One Bite Design Studio (http://www.onebitedesign.com)
5) Sky Yutaka – Sarah Lee and Yutaka Yano, Founding Directors of Sky Yutaka (https://sky-yutaka.com)
6) Eravolution – Eric Tong, Director and Principal Designer of Eravolution (http://www.pmq.org.hk/shop/eravolution)

In this fast-paced event, each of the six presenters/presenting team were given six minutes to tell the audience what or who inspires them and how that inspiration influenced the way they work with the aid of two A1 boards. The presenters did not disappoint and the audience was treated to an evening of thought-provoking talks and ideas, illustrated by a variety of interesting images. Jane Duncan, RIBA President (2015–2017), was the guest of honour at the event. In her summing-up speech, Duncan expressed her delight in seeing the diversity of creative thinking as presented by the speakers. She was also impressed by the diversity of the audience’s background, as there were students, young architects and designers, architects and designers from established practices, as well as those who are outside of the industry but interested in architecture, design and culture.

The RIBA HK Chapter is looking to build on the success of this first SHOWCASE! event and planning to host future instalments of SHOWCASE! regularly. If you are interested in finding out about SHOWCASE! and/or other initiatives by the RIBA HK Chapter, please send an email to [email protected].
