Park Hyatt Beijing – Tian Spa

Located on the 59th floor of Beijing Yintai Center—the tallest skyscraper on Chang’an Avenue in Beijing—it is no surprise that Tian Spa has an unbeatable panoramic sky view, overlooking the city of Beijing. The name Tian Spa could not be more apt as the word ‘tian’ means sky in Mandarin. Complementing Park Hyatt Beijing’s hospitality goal of giving each guest a personalised experience, the design objective of the spa is to present the personal as luxury.

Thus, this project placed great emphasis on setting the right interior environment to create a distinctive individual experience for the customers.

DEMATERIALISING THE BOUNDARIES OF SPACE
The spa has two single rooms and one couple room to cater to different needs. Dark-coloured panels imprinted with cloud images cover the walls of each room, giving the space a soothing, transcendental ambience. The equipment is hidden behind these walls of virtual clouds, creating an uninterrupted and calm environment for the guests. To heighten the whole spa experience, yellow-tinted glass windows are used to soften the natural sunlight, ensuring that the guests’ emotions are not affected by the weather outside, keeping them serene and relaxed. There is a personal shower and vanity space, treatment and rest area for the guests.

Each spa suite represents coexistence between efficiency and privacy—this is shown in the interior design approach. The space is organised and systematic yet the equipment and staff keep a respectful distance. The cloud imagery, use of dark colours and yellow-tinted windows, and welldesigned calm spaces all combine to promote a sense of calm and peace in the spa experience that seeks to bring comfort to both body and mind.

The cloud images are printed onto canvas and stretched across the walls and the sliding partitions inside the treatment room. Canvas is a durable fabric while glass is convenient and easy to sanitise; both materials require low maintenance. The project incorporates transformable and compact furniture to increase efficiency and flexibility. For example, the foot rests for guests and stools for the masseuses can be combined to create compact storage space.
