Soho Residence

Rowena Gonzales, founder of Liquid Interiors, and team transformed a 400-square-foot apartment in the heart of Central into a luxuriously chic haven with eco high-tech features, which creates a healthier living environment.

The client for this project was a pilot, whose main concerns were ensuring a deep sleep while at home and making this small space look larger for entertainment purposes. The interior design team adopted a minimalist design to fulfil the client’s requirements.

SMART STORAGE
The key to minimal design is having sufficient storage space, where each item is designed to have a place for keeping. This concept was applied through the design of hydraulic and hidden storage.

TRANSFORMABILITY
One of the more versatile ways to live is being able to transform small spaces easily and quickly by combining functions of rooms. In this design, the bedroom functions as the living and entertainment room with a hidden television wall and movable beanbags. The kitchen can also be concealed when it is not in use.

SLEEP QUALITY ENHANCEMENT
To enhance the client’s sleep quality, sound and light are improved through the use of doubleSOHO RESIDENCE PROJECT DATA Project Name Soho Residence Location 72F Hollywood Road, Central, Hong Kong Completion Date 23 December 2015 Site Area 400 square feet Interior Design Firm Liquid Interiors Limited Principal Designer Rowena Gonzales Images/Photos Liquid Interiors Limited glazed windows, 100-percent automatic blackout blinds, circadian lighting, sensor controlled night lighting, hotel grade quality mattress and silent air movement. Home automation was used to recreate the sun’s colour patterns, hence enhancing the client’s sleep quality through the control of colour temperature.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND SUSTAINABILITY
Many old buildings in Hong Kong have limited amount of electricity available. Features used to keep electricity usage low include: LPG gas for the stove top; LED lights on the ceiling; ceiling fans that create cross ventilation and minimise the use of air-conditioning; low-e double glazed windows for insulation; sheer window covering setting that allows light to fill the space during the day while blocking out heat from the sun; and energy monitoring. The design also included a heat pump and solar water heater that saves 87 percent of the client’s waterheating bill. 50 percent of the demolition waste was also recycled during construction.

HEALTHY INTERIORS
An activated carbon water filtration system was installed in the kitchen, a place for workout was created and high-efficiency particulate arrestance (HEPA) air purifiers that purify internal and external air were used in the home.
