The HKIA Cross-Strait Architectural Design Symposium and Awards 2019

The Cross-Strait Architectural Design Symposium and Awards 2019, organised by Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA) and sponsored by CreateHK, features prominent architects from belt and road and Cross-Strait region to learn and share their perspectives on architectural design. It is going to be a stage where architecture contribution and development for architectural design can shine and bright.

The HKIA Cross-Strait Architectural Design Symposium and Awards 2019 is organised every two years. The theme “Shape the shapeless” has been adopted to commence a new exploration and to expand the scope of CADSA as a culturally and designed focused event in 2019.

Eight professional categories to celebrate architectural creativity
The Cross-Strait Architectural Design Awards 2019 aims to celebrate and recognise architectural design excellence that contributes to better living, economic advancement, social harmony and the construction of a body of knowledge through innovation and creativity. The award brings forward the architectural exchange opportunity, allowing cross boundaries exchange to improvise architectural design and build environment within, Cross-Strait regions, the Asian countries and eventually, the global standard.

The award will be divided into eight categories: Residential; Commercial (Office / Hotel); Commercial (Shopping); Community; Culture & Recreational Projects; Education & Religious Projects; Transport & Infrastructure Facilities; and Architecture for Social Innovation. The Un-built Projects are also welcomed to participate in the competition.

As for the student design competition, the theme of ‘shape and shapeless’ challenges participants to interpret and redefine ‘shapes’ or ‘shapeless’ through an architectural intervention design proposal that transcends humanity and nature. The submissions are expected to reflect the spirit of physicality and philosophy aspects of ‘shapes’ or ‘shapeless’, and open a platform to discuss the direction of future development in the context of the Straits and the Belt and Road.

Exploring African architectural style
Renowned architects, theorists, historians and educators from different countries and regions are coordinately invited to speak and conduct workshop; sharing their knowledge and vision in Architecture and Culture together with current development situated in a global context.

The conference also invited Alexander TZONIS, a professor from the Delft University of Technology; Peter, a famous South African architect who designed the Mapungubwe Interpretation Center; Katherine Maree OTTEN, the award-winning South African architect. Professor Lu Lin, Chairman of the CADSA Committee and the adjudicator of the Hong Kong Institute of Architects’ Architectural Design Awards. — Construction+ Online
