HELP University Green Technology Subang 2 Campus

Situated on an approximately 4.6-acre site in Subang Bestari, the HELP University consists of three faculties, administration block, library, 200-pax lecture hall, 500-pax lecture theatre and services block.

The idea of this project was to create a climate-friendly university with the concept of a tropical garden campus. The campus site is surrounded with wild species of flora overlapping and layered within the campus blocks. The usage of warm materials at ground level provides a socialising space for the students, which expresses the concept of ‘celebrating journey of the students’ at every place for meetup. The overall objective of the design was to construct a sustainable academic building within an urban setting.

MATERIALS
Solid walls are located at the east and west sides of the building, with more openings at the north and south sides. Local, sustainable and lightweight materials, concrete blocks, as well as an interplay of windows and glass boxes were used to capture natural light and shadows, in an effort to create a conducive learning environment for the students within a Green tropical campus.

PIXELATED FAÇADE
The university’s corporate logo was incorporated into the design to become one of the main features in this project. The motto of the school—University of Achievers—sparked the whole idea of a pixelated light-capturing box. It functions as small windows and lighting in terms of architectural elements, while exploring the fundamental elements of natural light and triggering a sense of belonging among the users. The façade of the library was constructed using concrete blocks with interlocking metal framed glass boxes to create small openings that allow natural light to permeate into the internal spaces. This minimises the usage of artificial light and provides a different ambience and reading experience for users. Designed as a backdrop or feature wall, the façade faces the main road, Persiaran Cakerawala. The charcoal grey wall functions as the background, while it interlocks with a red glass box that transposes the entire façade into a pixelated HELP logo, which is also red.
